Case Ilmatar:
Konikallio wind power project’s landscape impacts showcased in 3D video – collaboration between Ilmatar and Huuru Media
The Konikallio wind power project, planned for the Ikaalinen and Hämeenkyrö area, is located in a nationally valuable landscape in Finland. At Ilmatar, landscape impacts were identified as a key aspect of the project already in the preliminary study phase. The project team decided to use 3D-modeled video footage to illustrate the landscape impacts and enhance communication.
The project emphasizes open communication
The project area is located within two municipalities and near a valuable landscape area, making stakeholder cooperation and social acceptance particularly important.
– We wanted to provide the most visual and accurate depiction possible of how the turbines would appear in the landscape at different times of day. That’s why we decided to try a 3D-modeled video, which was a new way for us to communicate about the project as transparently as possible, says Lauri Vierto, Chief Operating Officer of Project Development in Finland at Ilmatar.
– Both municipalities involved have been very pleased. We hope the video will improve interaction with stakeholders and also provide valuable additional information to those who have concerns about the project.
– The aim of the video is to enhance communication about the project’s impacts and to provide as much information as possible to the public. The video is not part of the official process but serves as a valuable complement to it.
– At Ilmatar, we have always aimed to be at the forefront and are eager to explore new possibilities. We usually do everything we can. A 3D-modeled video fits our operations extremely well.
A 3D-modeled video provides a realistic view of landscape impacts
– Moving images are far more visual than photo simulations, making them more effective for illustration.
– With drone footage, it’s easy to show how the view changes from ground level up to fifty meters in height. Even a small rise in the terrain or some trees in front can easily block the turbines from view.
– The video can also effectively illustrate the impact of different times of day. For example, it can show how the turbines and their aviation warning lights appear at night.
