Case Metsähallitus:
Huuru Media’s 3D visualization of the Korsnäs offshore wind project – an illustrative tool to support wind power development
Metsähallitus used a 3D-modeled video to illustrate the offshore wind farm planned in Korsnäs. The goal was to give local residents and stakeholders the most realistic and accurate view possible of the offshore wind farm that will be in operation in less than 10 years.
With realistic videos, a realistic view of the wind farm
Metsähallitus also used the 3D video to present the area when seeking a partner for the project’s implementation. Metsähallitus held discussions with numerous potential operators, some of whom were completely unfamiliar—both culturally and environmentally—with Finland and Korsnäs.
The aim was to showcase the project from different perspectives and from locations that hold significance for people. For this reason, the video also included footage of the Korsnäs surroundings and its culturally valuable sites.
– Planting 3D-modeled wind turbines into video footage where the trees and natural features appear exactly as they were in the landscape at the time of filming, we can create the most truthful and illustrative depiction possible of the turbines planned for that environment, says Ville Koskimäki, Project Development Manager at Metsähallitus.
– In Finland, we don’t yet have much experience of what turbines look like from distances of 10, 15, or 20 kilometers. There is also very little experience of how offshore turbines appear under different weather conditions.
– The filming happened to take place on the brightest day of the year, giving us the best possible visibility. However, islands and other obstructions blocking the view toward the sea and the project area made it difficult to find filming locations with a sufficiently clear view. For this reason, it was challenging to find spots offering an unobstructed view of the sea. In those locations, filming was done with a drone raised above the horizon, with the drone’s altitude shown in the finished video. This allows the viewer to understand that the footage does not represent the height from which people normally observe the landscape.
“We wanted the planned turbines to be as visible as possible, as the environmental impact assessment is also based on a worst-case view.”
The modeling project was a great success.
– In this project, the focus was on visualization. I myself have over 10 years of experience with various virtual models used to illustrate projects through graphics, says Koskimäki.
– So we began looking for a provider capable of producing the highest quality illustrative material possible. I had heard about and seen examples of how Huuru Media can embed wind turbines into real-time video footage. That’s why I arranged a meeting with them.
– The project with Huuru Media went excellently from start to finish. We agreed on the schedule and filming locations, and together we made a plan for which areas to examine. Huuru Media arranged the necessary travel plans, and then we hoped for good weather. And indeed, we got great weather. Everything was wrapped up very smoothly.
– The project was challenging, but they succeeded in it excellently. We were also able to incorporate elements belonging to Metsähallitus’ brand into the final product. I am very pleased, says Koskimäki.
